Belgium buzzes with bluegrass

Bluegrass in Belgium sends greetings and this news:

Lots of new bluegrass concerts announced on the calendar.

Also check out every Sunday evening at 23:00, 'Closing Time' on VRT Radio 1, presented by Johan Heldenbergh (Broken Circle Breakdown), with old country songs and some bluegrass. Very interesting!

A new bluegrass festival in Oelegem, Belgium, called 'Low Country Bluegrass Festival' on 29-30 June. A very nice initiative by Blue Maxx [above] with bands from Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, UK, and the Czech Republic. Make sure to support this festival in any way you can - for example, by buying tickets on http://www.lcbf.be.

Also don’t forget the annual European World of Bluegrass in Voorthuizen (NL) with about 40 European bands on 9-11 May. Still only two hours away from Brussels!

 FLATPICKING HEADQUARTERS
Ciao,
I'm so exited to announce the launch of my FLATPICKING ONLINE CLASSROOM at TrueFire.com.
I'm proud to be part of an amazing group of musicians/teachers there: Frank Vignola, Jeff Scheetz, Marcy Maxer, Sheryl Bailey, and many others.

You will get personalized one-on-one instruction - on your schedule, at your pace, anytime, anywhere in the world.

You will have 24-7 access to all of the video lessons and learning materials (Tabs-audio files-text) that I have prepared in the classroom.

Plus, you also have unlimited access to the thousands of video guitar lessons with tab, notation and rhythm tracks on TrueFire TV, the "most comprehensive guitar lesson library on the planet."

If you've never played flatpicking before, you can start here. If you've played, but are ready to improve I will show you everything I've learned over the years from my own teachers, and everything I know today about music.

I'm not a big fan of exercises, I prefer to learn how to play songs, and this is exactly what we'll do. Knowing tunes is the the best way to learn new ideas, new licks, new fingerings, new scale positions, new chords, new strumming patterns.

Most importantly, I'll be guiding you through all of the material every step of the way! We'll be communicating regularly with the video, audio and text communication tools in my Sherpa classroom.

It sounds great, right? CLICK HERE and find out more!
Roberto

Lilly of the West news January 2013

Lilly Drumeva reports from Bulgaria:

Happy new year to all! It was a good year for Lilly of the West! We released a new album, Swings & heartaches, and three brand new singles with supporting videos; we completed successful tours in Russia and Lithuania; we recruited two new band members, Lucy Stoynev (fiddle) and Paul Malini (drums), and we had lots of concerts during the summer, fall, and winter.

Lilly Drumeva has made her debut with a jazz/swing orchestra, Old Gold, with a brand new jazz repertoire.

In January LOTW visited Ireland - the land of music - and had great success at the Shannonside Winter Music Weekend. The band shared the stages with Grammy nominees Special Consensus.

Lilly Drumeva has re-edited the video to 'I needed you', a duet with Czech bluegrass singer/guitarist Jakub Racek (Monogram), which can be seen on YouTube.

Lilly will attend the 5th European Bluegrass Summit in Prague, 14-16 March, where she will perform with top-notch Czech musicians. And there is more to come in 2013… We’ll keep you posted!

A video treasury

Thanks to Ray Whiteway-Roberts (UK; see photo), whom many throughout Europe will know from his appearances as an MC (and performer) at major bluegrass festivals such as EWOB (NL) and La Roche (F).

Ray sends the news that in the last couple of years he has put over a thousand videos on his YouTube channel; in fact, the number at today's date is 1321. They are predominantly of performances by British and European bands at bluegrass events and folk clubs - so, as Ray says, he is 'doing something to record the music of our times for the future'.

The Toy Hearts, from Birmingham ('Brum') in England, announce:

Happy New Year to all our friends and fans!

Well, 2013 is shaping up to be the Toy Hearts' most exciting year yet: we'll be touring in Germany in February, gigging around the UK in March and April, and finally in our boldest and most daring move yet, we relocate to our surrogate home of Austin Texas in May (there will be more details on that to follow). However, before we get that far, we have lots of exciting events happening this side of the pond, including very special night at the Hare and Hounds, Kings Heath, TONIGHT!

So here is your last minute reminder...

Following our gigs with Jeff and Vida and Georgette Jones, we continue to endeavour to bring the very best USA artists right to your doorstep. We have been friends with the lovely and talented folks from Special Consensus [above] for a while now, and are delighted to present Greg Cahill and his band to the good people of Brum! The Toy Hearts will perform a set, then there'll be a set from Special C., and the evening will be rounded off in true bluegrass style with a multi-band jam.

TONIGHT - Sunday 13 January 2013 @ the Hare and Hounds, Kings Heath, Birmingham - Tickets: £10.00 - Doors 8.00 p.m.

We hope to see you tonight!
Warmest wishes to you all for 2013

Benjamin [Steegen (left), former guitarist and lead singer of the Sons] will be joining the Sons, only for this concert. So don't miss it!

A new bluegrass festival is being programmed the last weekend of June. Check the updated calendar on www.bluegrass.be.

More from the Klosterhof on YouTube: update

Thanks to Walter Pfender of www.eventvideos.tv, who attended the Bluegrass im Klosterhof 2013 mini-festival at Kusterdingen, Germany, on 5 January, video-recorded the whole concert, and edited some of the highlights down to make a twenty-minute sampler that can be seen on YouTube.

The photomontage that appeared with yesterday's post on the EBB is compiled from photos taken at this year's event by Eberhard Finke, founder of Bluegrass Buehne magazine, and now treasurer of the German Bluegrass Music Association.

Update: The growth of the concert into a mini-festival over three years has now been featured on the US Prescription Bluegrass Blog, where the video can also be seen.

Bluegrass im Klosterhof 2013: a great success

Thanks to Birgit and Dieter, aka Horse Mountain Acoustic Duo and organisers of the annual Bluegrass im Klosterhof event at Kusterdingen, Germany, who are happy to report:

... that the third 'Bluegrass im Klosterhof' concert has turned into a mini-festival of sorts - with eight acts, twenty-five musicians, a final jam session, and five-and-a-half hours of live music in front of a 200+ audience. Apart from the sheer bliss and great fun to share the stage with such great musicians, we take great pleasure in the fact that more than half the audience are locals. Most of them didn't know the first thing about bluegrass, acoustic country, or old-time music a few years back. We try to educate them as best we can...

Looking forward to next year's meeting, which is scheduled for Saturday 11 January 2014.

Niall Toner reads Prescription Bluegrass

Thanks to Brian McNeal of the Prescription Bluegrass Blog (USA) for the news that the latest in his weekly 'Who reads Prescription Bluegrass?' series (which has previously featured such artists as Greg Cahill and Claire Lynch) is devoted to Ireland's Niall Toner. Niall is the first European artist to be featured in the series.

As shown, each week's feature consists of a make-up 'magazine cover' and a brief descriptive text, together with links to other PBB posts connected with the subject. The featured artists add their own tribute to the PBB and their reasons for reading it. Read the whole of this week's feature here.

'Bluegrass im Klosterhof', 5 Jan. 2013

Thanks to Walter of www.eventvideos.tv in Germany for YouTube links to performance videos from the bluegrass and old-time-music gathering at the Klosterhof Kusterdingen cultural centre a year ago. They include nice versions by the old-time band Four Potatoes of 'Way down the old plank road' and 'Quince Dillion's high D'. The three videos can be seen here.

The corresponding concert this year, which will take place tomorrow (Sat. 5 Jan. 2013) at the Klosterhof from 19:00 to midnight, is a ticketed event - and it was completely sold out by 22 December 2012, so the organisers advise that anyone without a ticket should not travel to Kusterdingen tomorrow. Bands taking part include:

The County Boys
Big Stone Old Time Country Band (CH)
Four Potatoes
Mister Big Band
Horse Mountain

- and many more. More details are on the Bluegrass im Klosterhof website, including the full concert programme (subject to change without notice).
