Red Wine Bluegrass Party #3, 20-21 May 2011

Martino Coppo (left, above) of Red Wine (I) reports:

The Red Wine Bluegrass Party #3 was a blast! Our special guests, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, returning to Genova after 28 years (we organised a show for them in 1983), played two great shows last weekend for an enthusiastic crowd coming from all over Italy, France, and Switzerland.

Presenting new material from their latest CD Drive time, as well as some of their trademark a cappella gospel numbers and old hits, Doyle Lawson and the boys proved one more time to be one of the hottest bluegrass bands of all time, filling the Teatro della Gioventù with beautiful harmonies, soulful singing, solid arrangements, and tasteful breaks.

Several friends came to Genova and joined Red Wine on stage to make the Party even more special: Jens Koch [above, duetting with Silvio Ferretti], from the Swedish band G2; Jean Marie Peschiutta and Natalie Shelar, from the French band Turquoise; Paolo Bonfanti, great guitar player from Genova; Carlo Aonzo, worldwide classical mandolin virtuoso; and Lucas Bellotti, great bass player from Genova.

Saturday night show ended with a Bill Monroe tribute (2011 marks the 100th anniversary of his birth), with all the musicians together on stage for a rendition of the classic Monroe's 'The Gold Rush'.

While in Genova Doyle had also the chance to visit master luthier Corrado Giacomel's workshop, where he was so impressed as to acquire a brand new J5 Giacomel mandolin [right], which he played the same night on stage!

See you in 2012 for Red Wine Bluegrass Party #4, we've already started working for!
