After their successful 30th Birthday Celebration concert in February 2008, Red Wine (Italy) return a year later to the Teatro Della Gioventù in their home town of Genova, bringing an acoustic music party to their audience - mostly bluegrass but also open to side roads for a genre that has always seen all possible influences and evolutions as an integral part of its history.
Red Wine’s sound is firmly planted in traditional bluegrass, but has always striven to draw inspiration from different sources, and to adapt the typical bluegrass sound to songs that have a different flavour and which spring from roots that are definitely not in the North-American tradition.
Tim O'Brien (USA), as most acoustic music fans know well, has always been a scholar of the 'Old-Timey' tradition from which bluegrass music has sprung, and at the same time also an eclectic interpreter of the most various genres, even non-traditional, from western swing to jug-band music to old-style country music. He is an incredible multi-instrumentalist and a fantastic songwriter and singer, who can boast great technique and rare intensity and sensitivity. His career has seen him singing lead and playing mandolin and fiddle with the trail-blazing and trend-setting band Hot Rize (one of the most exciting groups in the history of bluegrass), a brief bout as a 'mainstream country' singer, and in recent years an intense work in rediscovering his own roots in Irish music and in establishing a new bridge between Irish and North-American traditional music. Tim O’Brien is truly a unique artist in the history of contemporary North-American music, as attested by the Grammy Awards he has won.
The Red Wine Bluegrass Party that will take place at the Teatro Della Gioventù, Genova, on 13-14 February 2009, will offer something various and eclectic to the audience, although mostly within the albeit ample path of the North-American musical tradition. There will be mostly bluegrass for sure, but it will be performed by a band and a musician that have always had very broad musical scope and taste.
The flyer for the Party can be seen here. Tim O'Brien - as announced on 10 January on the European Bluegrass Blog - will give mandolin workshops on the morning and afternoon of Saturday 14 February, as well as his concert performances with Red Wine.
