Liebe BANJOREE-Freunde,
allmählich rückt das BANJOREE 2011 näher. Der Termin steht fest (13.-15.05.2011) und die ersten Tutoren haben bereits zugesagt.
Weil bis dahin noch viel Zeit vergehen muss, habt ihr erstmal Gelegenheit, uns beim Tønder Folk Fest vom 26.08.-29.08.2010 zu besuchen. BANJOREE wird dort zum ersten Mal einen Stand haben und sowohl das Banjo Camp als auch einige Instrumente von Nechville und Gold Tone vorstellen. Wir werden den Stand zusammen mit Tom Nechville betreiben, der dort seine fantastischen modernen Banjokonzepte vorstellen und auch Setup-Tips für jede Art von Banjo geben wird. Wer also ohnehin vorhatte, sich in Tønder Hot Rize mit Pete Wernick und Bryan Sutton oder die hinreißenden Damen von Katzenjammer anzusehen, kann bei der Gelegenheit auch gleich bei BANJOREE hallo sagen.

Für Melodic und Contemporary Banjo konnten wir Jean-Marie Redon aus Frankreich gewinnen. Jean-Marie war einer der ersten Europäer, die in dem damals neuen Melodic-Stil Schallplattenaufnahmen veröffentlicht haben. Das war in den 70er Jahren und seitdem war Jean-Marie prägend für viele europäischen Banjospieler. Neben Philippe Bourgeois hat er es als einziger Europäer geschafft, im Standardwerk Masters of the 5-string banjo Erwähnung zu finden. Inzwischen hat Jean-Marie sich auch der Lehre verschrieben und eine Lehr-DVD herausgegeben. Wenn man ein wenig französisch kann, kann man bei http://actionbanjo.fr und http://redon-lombardi.fr/ einige seiner Aktivitäten verfolgen. Der BANJOREE-Workshop wird natürlich auf englisch gehalten. Als neues Instrument haben wir diesmal das bei Banjospielern so beliebte DOBRO aufgenommen. Tutor wird Nils Tuxen aus Dänemark sein. Nils ist eigentlich als international gefragter Pedal-Steel Gitarrist sehr erfolgreich. Seine Dobro Künste stehen dem jedoch in nichts nach und wir sind sehr froh, dass er uns für das BANJOREE zur Verfügung steht. Man kann ihn auch bei YouTube bestaunen.
Ebenfalls neu ist der Workshop für Bühnen- und Aufnahmetechnik, den Bruno van Hoek aus Holland für alle Instrumentalisten und Sänger leiten wird. So ziemlich jeder von uns hat sich schon mal gefragt: 'Warum pfeift es? Warum klingt mein Instrument so hart / matschig / …? Wie sag ich’s meinem Bühnentechniker? Habe ich das richtige Mikrofon? Trage ich die richtigen Schuhe?' Bruno wird im Workhop eine konkrete Bühnensituation aufbauen und dabei diese und andere Fragen behandeln.
'Blood on the banjo makes it sound...just right.' Das ist zumindest auf der Myspace Seite von Cera Impala zu lesen. Wir hoffen, dass es nicht ganz so drastisch wird, wenn sie den Workshop Clawhammer Banjo leitet und uns zeigt, wie man so richtig dynamisch und kraftvoll Clawhammer spielt. Cera ist Amerikanerin lebt aber jetzt mit Ihrem Mann Dirk Ronneburg in Berlin. Dort ist sie Banjoistin, Gitarristin und Sängerin der New Prohibition Band. Seht bei http://www.thenewprohibitionband.com/ und http://www.myspace.com/thenewprohibitionband, weshalb wir meinen, dass man diesen Workshop nicht verpassen sollte. Pflaster bringen wir mit.
BANJOREE hat schon immer Workshops aus dem kleinen aber feinen Bereich des Classic Banjo angeboten. Diesmal ist es uns gelungen, Chris Sands als Tutor für Classic Banjo zu verpflichten. Chris Sands ist einer der weltweit angesehensten Classic Banjo Spieler. Er lernte Classic Banjo von Tarrant Bailey Junior, einem der bekanntesten englischen Classic Banjo Interpreten. Chris hat schon in der ganzen Welt Classic Banjo Konzerte gegeben und ist auch ein erfahrener Lehrer für Schüler aller Kenntnisgrade. Mehr zum Classic Banjo bei www.BANJOREE.com.
Am liebsten hätten wir ja alle Tutoren aus 2009 wieder eingeladen, aber das würde eindeutig den Rahmen sprengen. Immerhin werden diese bekannten Gesichter wieder dabei sein:
Beim BANJOREE 2009 musste Ulf Jagfors aus Schweden leider kurzfristig absagen, aber diesmal hat er seine Teilnahme wieder zugesagt und wird uns über die neuesten Erkenntnisse seiner Banjoforschungen informieren.
Jürgen Biller aus dem Schwäbischen ist als DER europäische Spezialist für Scruggs Style schon von den vorigen BANJOREES bekannt. Manchmal fragt man sich, wie man es anstellen soll, eine Melodie aus Rock, Jazz, Folk oder Blues in den Scruggs Stil umzusetzen. Earl Scruggs selbst hat uns das schon immer vorgemacht und Jürgen zeigt allen wie's geht.
Die Anfänger wird Andreas David aus Berlin betreuen. Andreas ist auch schon von vorigen Veranstaltungen bekannt, 2009 hat er uns progressives Spiel à la Fleck und Co. vermittelt, diesmal widmet er sich den 3-Finger Anfängern, die im seit jeher besonders am Herzen liegen. Mit der BANJOREE Session Band ist er bei YouTube zu sehen.

slowly BANJOREE 2011 is approaching. The date is fixed (13-15 May 2011) and many tutors have already confirmed their attendance.
But it still is a long wait until BANJOREE 2011. To compensate for that you may visit us at the Tønder Folk Festival (26-29 August 2010). BANJOREE will have a stand there for the first time and inform about the music camp in 2011 as well as the instruments from Gold Tone and Nechville. Tom Nechville will share the stand with us and display his fantastic new banjo concepts. Also he will give setup tips for all kinds of conventional banjos.

For melodic and contemporary banjo we were able to book Jean-Marie Redon from France. Jean-Marie was one of the first Europeans to record in the then newfangled melodic banjo style. That was back in the seventies and since then Jean-Marie was formative for many European banjo players. Besides Philippe Bourgeois he was the only European to make his way into Tony Trischka's standard work Masters of the 5-string banjo. Meanwhile Jean-Marie also committed himself to teaching and has published a DVD for banjo students. The new instrument this time will be the DOBRO! Tutor will be Nils Tuxen from Denmark. Nils is an internationally sought after session musician, best known for his pedal steel abilities. Being a master Dobro player he will show us the meanest techniques like pick blocking, palm blocking, and slants. Another issue will be improvisation, even if you cannot find your capo!
Another new workshop is 'Recording- and stage-technique' from Bruno van Hoek from the Netherlands. The workshop will be suited for all instrumentalists and singers. Most everybody has asked himself: 'Where does the feedback come from? Why does my instrument sound so bad? How do I tell the soundman what I want? Do I have the right microphone? Do I wear correct shoes?' In the workshop Bruno will construct a real stage situation and answer these and many other questions.
'Blood on the Banjo makes it sound... just right'. At least this can be read on the MySpace site of Cera Impala. We hope that it will not be quite as drastic in Cera's clawhammer banjo workshop. She will show us how to play real dynamic and powerful clawhammer banjo. Cera is an American who now lives in Berlin with her husband Dirk Ronneburg. From the beginning BANJOREE offered workshops from the small yet superb world of classic banjo. This time we succeeded to hire Chris Sands from England as tutor. Chris Sands is one of the finest classical banjo performers in the world today. Chris studied the classical banjo with Tarrant Bailey Junior, who was one of the greatest English classical banjo performers of the 20th. century. Unfortunately we cannot have all the tutors from past BANJOREEs again. But we are lucky to see these faces again in 2011:
In 2011 Ulf Jagfors from Sweden had to cancel his performance on short notice. But this time he will be with us again to provide us with the newest insights about the African heritage of the banjo.
Jürgen Biller from Swabia (yes, this is a part of Germany) is the leading European expert on Scruggs-style banjo and many banjo players know him from his playing with the band Four Wheel Drive - and from past BANJOREE events. If you ever asked yourself how to play any melody from the realms of rock, jazz, folk, or blues in Scruggs-style, you are the person for this workshop. Earl himself has done it and Jürgen will show you how you can do it.
Andreas David from Berlin will care for the beginners of 3-finger styles. In 2009 Andreas showed us how the ultra-progressive styles of guys like Bela Fleck are played. This time he shifts a couple of gears down and shows us how even people like Bela Fleck got started. You can admire Andreas's banjo playing in a YouTube clip of the BANJOREE session band.
